Stairs and Hallways Checklist

Stairs and hallways are common areas for slips and loss of balance. Good lighting, clear pathways, and sturdy support make a big difference in preventing falls. These simple checks help you move through your home with confidence.

☐ Keep hallways and stairways clear of clutter, shoes, and obstacles

☐ Ensure bright, even lighting and add motion or nightlights for nighttime visibility

☐ Install handrails on at least one side of stairs — ideally both

☐ Make sure handrails are sturdy, easy to grip, and continuous

☐ Use non-slip stair treads or low-pile carpeting on steps

☐ Mark step edges with clear contrast to improve depth perception

☐ Secure or remove any rugs that could slide or bunch near stairs

☐ Ensure floors and thresholds are even with no raised edges

☐ Avoid carrying heavy items up or down the stairs

☐ Keep electrical cords away from hallways and stair landings
